Where to Glade Ski in New Hampshire, Thanks to Granite Backcountry Alliance

A frigid northwest wind greets me as I near the summit of North Doublehead Mountain in Jackson, N.H. The temperature is hovering in the mid-20s, but the fierce gusts make it feel much colder and will keep me from lingering too long at the top. No sweat, I think. I’m not here for a picnic. I’m here to ski.

On the Money: AMC Introduces New Summer Jobs for Teens in Holyoke

The sounds of summer are only a few weeks away: kids laughing and playing at the park, the conspicuous jingle of the ice cream truck, the buzz of lawnmowers cutting the grass, pickaxes and shovels clinking on hardened earth and rock. Wait, pickaxes and shovels? That’s right: Summer is trail work season in New England.

Leading by Example: Meet the Role Models Shepherding Youth Outdoors in YOP’s 50th Year

Morning is still asserting itself—early light eking through dusty windows, aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting in from the kitchen—as eight strangers settle into mismatched couches and chairs on an unseasonably warm Thursday in October.

For years, AMC’s Four Thousand Footer Club has awarded intrepid hikers who climb all 48 of New Hampshire’s 4,000-foot peaks with a commemorative patch. My Appalachian Rail Thru-Ride: A Hiker Parallels the Appalachian Trail by Train, Auto & Foot

I’ve always been fascinated by maps. I can’t go more than a day or two without picking one up and losing myself in the intricate details of a three-dimensional world flattened and scaled to fit on a page. As I was thinning out my stash one day—grudgingly admitting that 50 topographic renderings of Mount Washington might be overkill—I stumbled on a forgotten set of AAA road maps.

Camp Dodge: Revisit AMC’s Volunteer Trails Hub on the Eve of its Renovation

Signs of spring in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) come in many shapes and forms, from skiers trudging up Tuckerman Ravine in search of soft snow to migratory birds returning to the native-plants garden at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. But 4 miles north of Pinkham, at AMC’s Camp Dodge Volunteer Center, there’s a singular reminder of spring’s arrival.

Best Stargazing in the Northeast & Mid-Atlantic

When I was growing up, my bedroom ceiling was adorned with plastic glow-in-the-dark stars, comets, and galaxies. Every night I’d lie in my bed and marvel at the constellations glowing above me––some invented, others favorites from the summer night sky: Cassiopeia, the queen; the Big and Little Dippers; Draco, the dragon. I’d seal off my windows with blankets and duct tape to prevent any light from leaking in at night.
