Wearing complementary colors not only creates a unified tone to your photos, they can also help subjects stand out from the background.
What to Wear: Bring Your Photo Shoots to the Next Level
Feeling confident, comfortable, and relaxed is the first step to a successful photo shoot. Simply start with a color that you like, or choose an item of clothing that you know you feel great in. Think in terms of tones: blue tones, earth tones, neutrals, pastels, etc. Everyone in the family can express their own sense of style within the chosen color palette. Try not to match as much as coordinate your wardrobe across the board. Shopping at the same clothing store can help you with coordination. If you don't know where to start, here are a few tips:
+ Layering, including jackets, sweaters, and scarfs, are great and they will all help to frame the face and add interest. Don't be afraid of bringing some accessories as long as they don't overwhelm.
+ Patterns are OK as long as they don't take over. Think small checkers rather than large plaids or florals.
+ Feel free to bring a few options (including accessories) to your session and we can look through them together.
All About Color
There are really no "off-limit" colors. You just need to think about the tone you want to set. Keep in mind:
+ A fail-safe tip is to pick a color that accentuates your eyes.
+ Think about the photo shoot’s location (e.g., beach, forest, garden) and the tone and theme you’re going for (e.g., rustic, formal, casual).
+ Jewel tones and richer neutrals such as chocolate, dark gray, or navy, are great alternatives to black.
+ People often hear that they should stay away from black and white, but it's really a matter of personal taste and skin tone. Both colors do well when used with accessories or layers.
+ Consider the colors in your location. For example, if you know there is going to be a lot of green foliage around you, consider wearing a color that helps you “pop” out of your background. Choosing to dress in complementary colors is a great way to not only make your images visually pleasing but also to add some separation from the background. (e.g., green garments can get lost in a verdant background).
Other Tips
+ Don’t forget about shoes and the color and type of socks you wear. These oft-forgetten about details can stick out like a sore thumb.
+ Make-up should be kept natural, and it can be a nice treat to have it professionally done. Avoid anything with shine. A good highlight works well, but matte is best for photos.
+ Please be sure that clothes fit well! Try them on before hand. A garment that doesn’t fit will look messy. Don't forget to press your clothes prior to your shoot! Wrinkles are hard to remove in Photoshop.

+ Pack some water and snacks and be well rested ahead of your session. Your outfit might be on point, but if you’re energy is lagging, even the best cameras can’t remedy fatigue.
